I had been inside St. Peter’s Basilica for only a few minutes when I saw this woman walk straight in and go directly to this angel. She brought her right hand up to its cheek, and then whispered into its ear. Minutes passed. Then she brought her hand down, turned on her heel and walked straight out the open door. I was a timid photographer then. Mostly taking pictures of things that couldn’t speak back to me or looking at life through the cracks. But this was a moment that changed me. I didn’t want it to stop. I wanted to make it last.
