Sometimes the thing you set out to find isn’t really what you’re looking for, as in the case of this photograph.
I was on assignment, photographing a beautiful home on a grassy bluff on San Juan Island, which lies off the coast of Washington State near the Canadian border. I’d awoken quite early and set up to capture the house in the early light. As I looked through the viewfinder, I noticed a strange, dark blur slowly moving towards me. Looking up, this silver and black colored red fox met my eyes. It walked past me, unhurried but curious, searching for breakfast in the nearby grass.
I spent the rest of that morning photographing the fox, not the house.
